The remains of politician and entrepreneur, Arthur Njribe, were laid to rest on Saturday at his country home, Oguta, in the Oguta local government area of Imo state.

Mr Nzeribe, a former Nigerian senator, passed away on May 5 at the age of 83.

Governor Hope Uzodinma, in his remarks at the funeral, said Mr Nzeribe will always be remembered for his contributions to the political and business spheres.

“I took the time to go through the tributes and found that we were all saying the same thing – he lived great,” Mr. Uzodinma said.

“Today, we are touched by the words of our friend, the man who defined the political sacrifice of Nigeria.

“We may disagree politically because of Party A and Party B, but Ogbuagu, Oshiji Damanze Oeimba was a common denominator. They created a platform that became a school.

“The knowledge most of us have acquired from school is still being used as an asset.

“Yes, we have lost him, but in the end, his work and activities in both active politics, business and philanthropy will always speak to him,” he said.

The Governor assured adequate security to the guests at the funeral ceremony.

Catholic priest, John Obillo, who preached at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oguta, praised the life and times of the late Nzeribe.

Mr Obilo warned political leaders against injustice and “withholding the truth”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the event attracted celebrities including former governors of the state, Emeka Ihedioha and Ikedi Ohkim.

Also present at the event were former Imo State Senator Osita Izunaso, National Inland Waterways Authority Managing Director George Muoglu and some Igbo traditional rulers.

The late Njeribe represented the Orlu senatorial district under the inactive party, the Nigeria People’s Party, in the Second Republic from October to December 1993.

He later represented the Imo West District from 1999 to 2007 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party.

The late politician will be remembered for his infamous role during the presidential election of June 12, 1993, how he delivered a midnight court ruling against the conduct of the election.
