Memorial’s men’s A-relay team got things rolling for their side on Friday when the team of Matthew Whelan, Logan Palmer, Mostafa Zein and Thomas Chafe finished the 4x200m freestyle in a time of 7:41.42.

It was good enough for third place, just behind Acadia and Dalhousie, and set a provincial record as it broke one that had stood since 1983.

That success continued on Day 2 of the competition. In the 400m individual medley, Matthew Whelan set a team and provincial record with a time of 4:25.39 as he finished in first place. Whelan’s time also met the standard for U SPORTS qualification.

His gold finish wasn’t the only Top-3 placing for Memorial swimmers that day. In the 100m butterfly, Heidi Perry finished third, while Thomas Chafe finished first in the 200m freestyle event.

Ali Warren picked up the Sea-Hawks' first silver finish of the weekend with a second-place finish in the 50m backstroke.

Finishing off the day, the men’s A-relay team came third in the 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.46, which was also good for a provincial record.

That momentum carried over into the third and final day of competition. First, Heidi Perry won a silver medal in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:24.31.

Kate Williams finished first in the 100m backstroke, which was followed by a third-place finish in the 100m freestyle final with a time of 58.88.

Matthew Whelan continued his strong weekend in the water with another gold medal and another provincial record, winning the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:05.24.

He also brought home silver in the 400m freestyle in a time of 4:05.73.

Thomas Chafe made it two Sea-Hawks on the podium in the 200m medley when he finished third with a time of 2:10.56.

The women’s A-relay team finished things off on a strong note when they finished third in the women’s 4x100m individual medley. The team is made up of Kate Williams, Marcy Whelan, Heidi Perry and Kathryn Stokes.

The Sea-Hawks finished with four gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.

The men’s team finished with 529 points and the women’s team ended the weekend with 616 points. That was good for both the men’s and women’s teams to finish in third place in the overall team standings.

Next up for the Sea-Hawks will be the AUS championships, which will be hosted by Memorial University Feb. 10-12.
