The Hauts-de-France region has voted a grant of 40,000 euros for the benefit of an anti-wind association for 2022. This amount should be increased in 2023 and 2024 until it reaches 70,000 euros, provoking the anger of the leftist opposition.

The Hauts-de-France region, chaired by Xavier Bertrand (LR), voted on May 19 in Amiens for a grant of 40,000 euros for 2022 in favor of the “Stop Eoliennes Hauts-de-France” federation, provoking ire of the left opposition who denounced a “shame”.

A “multi-annual agreement of objectives and resources for the period 2022/2024” was concluded between the Region and this association providing for subsidies of 60,000 euros in 2023 and 70,000 in 2024.

“[Dans les Hauts-de-France] which represent 6% of the national territory, we have 30% of the number of masts in France, it is far too many. We are major contributors to wind power generation. It has to stop. The people can’t take it anymore,” Christophe Coulon, vice-president in charge of rurality, told AFP.

“No one on the regional council is climatosceptic. Everyone is convinced of the need to decarbonize our energy mix, but it’s all a question of proportion”, he added, specifying that this funding will be used to “disseminate information, carry out studies to enlighten the population , elected officials, and possibly lodge appeals [en justice]”.

Environmentalists will request a legality check from the prefect

“[L’éolien] makes it possible to reduce greenhouse gases, creates profit, employment… interests that are never valued. The debate is “wind turbines, it’s beautiful or not beautiful”, but that’s not the subject! The subject is climate change and there we want to go back”, protested Thomas Hutin, regional ecological adviser.

“We are going to make a request for a legality check to the prefect to find out if this deliberation is in the nails”, announced Katy Vuylsteker, regional environmental adviser, pointing to the choice of funding for such a young association and denouncing “the obsession anti-wind turbine” by Xavier Bertrand.

“Stop Éoliennes Hauts-de-France” presents itself as a regional federation created in 2022 “which aims to federate the associations of Hauts-de-France which fight against wind energy development in this region”.
