A huge fire has broken out in a town near Hull after witnesses heard ‘explosions’ coming from a factory.

People in Hessle are being advised to close all windows and doors until the incident is under control.

A thick plume of black smoke rising above the scene at Thompsons Plastics is visible for miles around.

Some local residents are currently without power and being told to stay away from the area.

Fire crews are in attendance and businesses in the area have been forced to shut up shop.

It remains unclear how the huge blaze started but witnesses have reported hearing loud bangs coming from the area.

Ann Price, who works at Coversure in Hull close to where the blaze broke out, told Metro.co.uk: ‘I really don’t know much about how it started, I guess we noticed the smoke around three-ish and could see the fire brigade was already there.

‘It started as just some black smoke coming from the far end of the building and as time went on quickly got much worse.

‘It wasn’t long before flames could be seen and a huge cloud of black smoke trailed in the sky.’

Gemma Nesvik, 24, from Hessle, told Metro.co.uk: ‘I heard two massive explosions and the power went out and came back on.

‘More explosions went off and then [I saw] black smoke. We totally lost power.’

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said: ‘We advise local residents to close windows and doors.

‘Please avoid the Priory Way to A63 area and be mindful there is a large amount of smoke in the area and surrounding roads.’

Humberside Police also warned members of the public to avoid the area.
