Breaking news French Lawmaker Suspended For 15 Days After Waving Palestinian Flag In Parliament Lastminute news

National Assembly President halts session, calls Sebastien Delogu's behavior 'inadmissible,' but lawmaker expresses pride in 'standing up to international law, Palestinians'

French left-wing lawmaker Sebastien Delogu on Tuesday was suspended for 15 days after he waved a Palestinian flag in parliament.

During questions to the government session in the lower chamber of the parliament, or the National Assembly, Alma Dufour, a member of the La France Insoumise (LFI) party, called on the government to suspend economic ties with Israel and to request that the UN intervene immediately and send Blue Beret troops to Palestine, which is under constant attack by the Israeli army.

Franck Riester, minister delegate at the Foreign Ministry, began responding to her questions before being interrupted by Dufour's colleague from LFI, Sebastien Delogu, who hailed a Palestinian flag.

President National Assembly Yael Braun-Pivet immediately halted the session after calling it "inadmissible."

Lawmakers then voted to suspend Sebastien Delogu for 15 days.

"By waving a Palestinian flag, will the president of the republic finally wake up and tell himself to stop selling weapons? Can he now ask to recognize the Palestinian statehood?" Delogu told reporters after the session.

"I think the French state is an accomplice in what happens today in Palestine. Our group (LFI party) and I are proud of standing up for international law, and the people who are currently suffering and (being) massacred in Palestine," Delogu added.

France has openly supported Israel since the conflict began on Oct. 7, but LFI members have stood in solidarity with Palestine and criticized the government's stance.

French President Emmanuel Macron, however, expressed on Monday his "outrage" over Israeli strikes on Rafah.

"These operations must stop. There are no safe areas in Rafah for Palestinian civilians. I call for full respect for international law and an immediate ceasefire," the president said.

Earlier, the French Foreign Ministry said it was "necessary, more than ever, that the UN Security Council adopts a new resolution" on the Middle East situation.

Israel has continued its brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, following a Hamas attack despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in the enclave.

Nearly 36,100 Palestinians have since been killed in Gaza, the vast majority being women and children, and over 81,000 others injured, according to local health authorities.

More than seven months into the Israeli war, vast swathes of Gaza lay in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine.

Israel stands accused of "genocide" at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered Tel Aviv to ensure its forces do not commit acts of genocide and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza. -
