Index still consistent with continued employment growth; employment will likely continue to grow, says economist.

US employment trends index (ETI) increased in March, according to New York-based research group The Conference Board on Monday.

The index, a leading composite indicator for employment, rose 0.99 point to 112.84 last month.

The figure for February was revised down to 111.85 from 112.29.

"The ETI increased slightly in March, signaling employment will continue to grow in Q2 of 2024," said Will Baltrus, an associate economist at The Conference Board.

"Although the ETI has been on a downward trajectory since its peak in March 2022, this trend has decelerated since August 2023, with monthly oscillations between modest increases and modest decreases," he said.

The index remains above its pre-pandemic level and is still consistent with continued employment growth, said Baltrus, adding that employment will likely continue to grow or at worst flatten. -
