Breaking news US Says It Successfully Destroyed Military Assets Of Yemen's Houthis Lastminute news

CENTCOM says it determined that missiles and systems presented 'imminent threat' to US, coalition forces and merchant vessels in region.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Wednesday that it successfully destroyed military assets of Yemen's Houthi group.

"At approximately 8: 40 p.m. (Sanaa time) May 28, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces successfully destroyed two missile launchers in an Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled area of Yemen," CENTCOM said in a statement.

Separately, it said, Houthis on Tuesday launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBM) from Yemen into the Red Sea, adding there were no injuries or damage reported by US, coalition or commercial ships.

CENTCOM added that its forces on Wednesday successfully destroyed two uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) over the Red Sea launched from a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen.

"It was determined these missiles and systems presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region. These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure," it added.

Yemen's Houthi group has been targeting Israeli-linked cargo ships in the Red Sea in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli onslaught since Oct. 7 last year.

The Red Sea is one of the world's most frequently used sea routes for oil and fuel shipments.

Earlier this year, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a multinational mission, Operation Prosperity Guardian, to counter Houthi attacks. -
