Iran blamed Security Council for not denouncing 'Zionist regime's reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus'

Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN blamed the Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday for failing to take action on the airstrike against the Iranian consulate building in Syria.

It hinted at Iran "punishing" Israel for the strike.

"Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime's reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," it wrote on X.

Separately, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, told reporters that Moscow is trying to get the UNSC to issue a draft statement regarding the attack.

Nebenzia stated, however, that the issuance of a statement was blocked by "Anglo-Saxon colleagues."

Tel Aviv is on high alert amid fears of a possible Iranian attack on Israeli targets after threats by Tehran to retaliate for an alleged Israeli strike on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus on April 1.

At least seven members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two top generals, were killed in the attack.

While Iran has accused Israel of carrying out the attack and vowed to respond, Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack.

The escalation in tensions came as Israel continues to wage a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack in early October by the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, which killed less than 1,200 people.

More than 33,100 Palestinians have since been killed and over 75,800 injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities. -
